The week's story
These are the GitHub repos that gained the most stars in week 42, from October 12 to 18. Most numbers are measured by us, from our own snapshots of October 11 and 19. Two come from GitHub's own Trending page. We count down the top five: what each one does, why it climbed, and whether you should try it. Then five more, and a second look at last week's mystery repo.
Number five. DeepSeek Harness, with 6,357 new stars, on top of almost 250,000. It is DeepSeek's own open-source agent harness, where everything is a plugin, and it runs with one npx command in a web UI. Nearly 3,800 commits in a month. It is a developer preview, and the team warns about breaking changes. Verdict: try it, in a sandbox.
Number four. Ghidra, with 7,602 new stars, as reported by GitHub Trending. It is the reverse engineering framework from the NSA, released in 2019: it takes compiled programs apart into readable code. It climbed the same week reverse engineering with agents went viral, and agent tools can use Ghidra as their engine. We cannot prove the link. Verdict: try it, if you read binaries.
Number three. Matt Pocock's skills, with 10,406 new stars, on top of more than 285,000. Last week's number one: the instruction files a well-known TypeScript teacher gives his coding agent every day. Verdict: try it, but read it first.
Number two. ArtCraft, with 16,379 new stars, as reported by GitHub Trending. It calls itself the IDE for artists: you compose in 2D, stage scenes in 3D, then pick the AI model that generates the image or video. The repo is from 2022, with only 18 commits in the last month, so the climb is attention, not a burst of new code. Verdict: try it, if you make images or video.
Number one. VoiceStudio, with 17,616 new stars. It is a local, open-source voice studio: voice cloning, voice design, video dubbing and audiobooks, with an API agents can call. It was number one two weeks ago, number six last week, and it is back on top. Verdict: try it.
Also climbing this week: HyperFrames from HeyGen, which turns HTML into video. iFixAi, for auditing what your AI agents do. XERJ, a new way for AI to search your data. MoneyPrinterTurbo, short videos from a single topic. And Moli, the headless browser for agents.
And a second look at last week's mystery. REA promises to reverse engineer anything with agents. On October 5 it had about 3,600 stars. On October 11, over 110,000. On October 19, over 329,000. It now has more than 83,000 forks, and this week GitHub's Trending page does list it. We still make no claim about what happened. A star is a bookmark, not a review.
So this week, voice and video tools led the chart, and reverse engineering moved into the agent toolbox. The full radar is at kargin-utkin.com.
*How this is made: stars, forks, commits, issues and releases are counted from GH Archive, the public record of GitHub events, for the Friday-to-Thursday window. Lists, courses and prompt collections are left out. Descriptions are each project's own. *
