The week's story

These are the GitHub repos that gained the most stars in the last week of 2025, from December 26 to January 1. We count down the top five: what each one does, why it climbed, and whether you should try it. Then the five just behind them, and one repo whose numbers do not add up.

Number five. Pathway, with 1,410 new stars. It is a Python framework for streaming data: you write a normal pipeline, and it keeps the results updated as new data arrives, including the data behind a RAG system. It climbed because teams want their AI answers to use live data, not last night's export. Its license is not a standard open-source one, so read the terms first. Verdict: try it, if you run data pipelines.

Number four. Vibe Kanban, from Bloop, with 1,761 new stars. It is a kanban board for coding agents: you plan work as cards, and agents like Claude Code or Codex pick them up and do them. It climbed because engineers were spending their days planning and reviewing agents instead of typing code. But its README today says the project is sunsetting. Verdict: skip it now, but keep the idea.

Number three. Anthropic's skills, with 1,905 new stars. These are Anthropic's own instruction folders that teach Claude a task, like working with documents or spreadsheets, in a repeatable way. It climbed because this was the week engineers started treating skills as something to share. Verdict: try it, and read it before you install it.

Number two. Witr, short for why is this running, with 3,883 new stars, in a repo less than two weeks old. You point it at a process, a port, a container or a file, and it traces the whole chain back to what started it. Every engineer has stared at a mystery process on port 8080. It climbed because it answers that question in one command. Verdict: try it.

Number one. Mole, with 4,387 new stars. It cleans, uninstalls, analyzes and monitors your Mac from the terminal, and it is free. It shipped 199 commits in the month, so it is actively built. It climbed in the week people clean up their machines for the new year. Note that its license is GPL, and there is also a paid Mac app. Verdict: try it, if you are on a Mac.

Also climbing this week: Pathway's own LLM app templates, the OpenCode coding agent, Resemble's Chatterbox speech model, a collection of skills for context engineering, and the Superpowers skills framework.

And one repo whose numbers do not add up. RuView claims to see through walls with WiFi, measuring breathing and heart rate. It gained over 2,000 stars this week, but the public event log shows no commits and no closed issues in the whole month. We make no claim about why. A star is a bookmark, not a review.

So the year started with engineers cleaning up. Tools that show what your machine is doing, and tools that keep your agents in order. The full radar is at kargin-utkin.com.

How this is made: stars, forks, commits, issues and releases are counted from GH Archive, the public record of GitHub events, for the Friday-to-Thursday window. Lists, courses and prompt collections are left out. Descriptions are each project's own. Total stars, licenses and descriptions are as of October 2026.
