White House Weighs New Watchdog to Vet AI Models for Safety Risks

The Trump administration is exploring the creation of an independent regulatory body to assess the safety of artificial intelligence models, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The proposed agency would operate under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, following a model similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), which oversees securities firms.

The plan, which involves input from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is currently being reviewed by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Sources note that President Trump has not yet seen the proposal. The move comes after Silicon Valley executives voiced frustration over what they saw as abrupt U.S. policies that slowed the rollout of advanced AI systems. The new regulator would give industry players a formal role in shaping safety standards.

The push for oversight follows recent security actions. In late June, AI developer Anthropic confirmed that the U.S. government restored access to its most powerful model, Mythos 5, for select American safety organizations. Earlier, Washington had blocked foreign states and individuals from using Mythos 5 and another model, Fable 5, citing national security concerns. AI remains a cornerstone of Trump’s agenda to maintain U.S. technological leadership, boost economic competitiveness, and strengthen national defense.
