Valve Collaborates with Intel and Nvidia to Expand SteamOS GPU Support

In a significant development for the gaming community, Valve has confirmed its collaboration with Intel and Nvidia to enhance SteamOS compatibility with a broader range of GPUs. This partnership aims to overcome the limitations of Windows on handheld gaming PCs, such as the MSI Claw gaming handhelds, which have primarily been Windows-based devices. By working together, Valve and Intel are making strides in optimizing the graphics stack for Intel's hardware, with Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais acknowledging Intel's efforts in getting the graphics stack up and running. The recent SteamOS 3.8 update includes initial firmware for upcoming Intel handhelds and controller support for select MSI Claw devices. Some users have already successfully installed SteamOS on Intel devices, including the MSI Claw 8 AI Plus and an Intel Arc B580 desktop GPU. While Nvidia support is also in the works, Valve's Griffais cautions that it may not be available this year, despite the company's close collaboration with Nvidia and a dedicated team working on Nvidia drivers. As Valve opens up the possibility of building custom Steam Machine-like desktops with the SteamOS 3.8 release, the company's efforts to expand GPU support are poised to revolutionize the gaming experience on Linux-based systems.
