Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs Team Up on AI Music Creation Platform

Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have signed a multi-year licensing agreement and a broader strategic partnership to launch an AI-powered music platform.

The software, which has no name yet, is still in development with no release date. It will let fans create remixes and mashups using licensed music from UMG artists who opt in and are fairly compensated. ElevenLabs' tools will also generate new track interpretations and personalized vocal experiences.

This marks ElevenLabs' first deal with a major label. The platform is separate from its ElevenMusic generation tool. The two companies also plan to work on new AI audio products for artists, UMG said in a press release.

The music industry's relationship with AI remains tense. Months ago, a coalition including UMG called for AI slop tracks to be banned from charts worldwide. Lawsuits against AI companies like Suno and Udio over copyright infringement have been common, though some, such as Warner's 2024 case against Udio, ended in settlements and licensing deals. This week, Suno said its v6 AI music models marked the formal start of its relationships with labels including Warner and BMG.
