Patrick Collison dropped a stark number on a recent podcast: one in six new sign-ups for AI companies using Stripe is fraudulent. Token theft has doubled in six months, with the worst acceleration coming last month. The mechanics are simple—fraudsters spin up fake accounts, burn through free trial tokens via automated agents, and disappear before the bill arrives. For AI startups, those tokens represent real compute cost. Free trials, once a growth lever, have become a liability some have simply killed.
Stripe’s head of data and AI, Emily Sands, calls this one of the most overlooked issues in AI. Attackers consume inference at machine speed, racking up bills they never intend to pay. Traditional fraud teams can’t react fast enough. A $500 token pack meant to convert a user vanishes in minutes.
Stripe’s response came at its Sessions 2026 conference with 288 product launches, many targeting this exact pain. The updated Radar system now scans sign-ups and usage in real time, pulling signals from IP addresses, email domains, and device fingerprints across Stripe’s network. For eight high-growth AI businesses, Radar blocked over 3.3 million risky sign-ups in a single month. Conversion rates for legitimate users jumped from one in 25 to one in three.
The deeper architectural shift is toward streaming payments. Stripe’s acquisition of Metronome enables per-token billing in real time, combined with micropayments on the Tempo blockchain using stablecoins. When tokens flow like money, payments must match that speed. Traditional billing cycles can’t keep up. Continuous payment reduces abuse because there’s no large upfront credit to steal.
Stripe also launched agent wallets, built on its Link consumer wallet with 250 million users. Each task gets a one-time card; real payment details stay hidden. Approval remains with the human. The company partnered with Google to let businesses sell directly inside AI Mode and the Gemini app, with similar deals for OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta.
The network effect works in Stripe’s favor: more AI traffic through its systems means smarter fraud models. One company’s suspicious pattern informs protection for all. Stripe processed over a trillion dollars last year and hit a $159 billion valuation in February. The infrastructure layer is fighting back.
