Perplexity Ships an On-Device AI Agent That Lives in Your Mac's Filesystem

Perplexity just made its Personal Computer feature generally available to all Mac users on Pro or Max plans, shifting from a cloud-only orchestration layer to a locally resident agent with direct filesystem access, application control, and web browsing. The redesigned Mac app, announced Thursday, lets paying subscribers route tasks across models including Opus 4.6, Gemini, Grok, and GPT variants through a multi-model engine first introduced in February. The key architectural change: reasoning now runs on-device, not in a remote cluster. "We took Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place," the company stated.

Early testers report a persistent worker that continues organizing folders, comparing spreadsheets, or drafting reports after the user steps away. Double-tapping both Command keys wakes the system; it accepts text or voice and pulls context from the active application. Security is sandboxed at the filesystem level, with explicit approval required for every significant action, a kill switch, and full audit trails. Perplexity frames this as a managed colleague rather than an autonomous force with unchecked access.

Apple noted the move during its Q2 2026 earnings call, highlighting how the unified memory architecture in Apple silicon provides an efficient platform for always-available assistants. The app remains a direct download for now; the older Mac application will be deprecated in coming weeks.

Practical examples show the system handling connective tissue: organizing materials across folders, comparing reports from different apps, or assembling notes from Messages, pulling spreadsheet data, and generating a live dashboard. Pricing ties to existing credits; consumption rates for heavy agentic sessions remain undisclosed.

The launch raises engineering trade-offs. Local agents require broad permissions, and earlier entrants like OpenClaw drew criticism for security gaps. Perplexity runs sensitive steps in a server-side sandbox while keeping core context on the Mac—a balance that will face real-world testing. Long-running agents on a Mac mini consume power and generate heat; enterprise IT may hesitate despite audit logs. Results depend entirely on underlying models' planning and error recovery.

Still, the direction is clear. Competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI have signaled agent initiatives but none have shipped a product with this level of filesystem integration on personal hardware. Perplexity's head start on Apple silicon may prove decisive. The question is no longer whether such agents will matter, but how quickly users will trust them with real work.
