Passkey Adoption: Exposing Gaps in Security Implementation

As the tech industry continues to prioritize account security, passkeys have emerged as a superior alternative to traditional passwords. Despite their advantages, a significant number of major apps and services still don't offer passkey support, including notable exceptions like Instagram, Netflix, and Spotify. A new website, whynopasskeys.com, has been launched to track and publicly list companies that haven't implemented passkey authentication. By generating device-specific credentials tied to a particular website, passkeys provide enhanced security through biometric authentication and automatic storage in password managers. This approach eliminates the need for users to remember complex passwords, making it more difficult for hackers to exploit. The website's creator, security researcher Scott Helme, aims to encourage companies to adopt passkey support by leveraging the power of public accountability. Major players like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have already integrated passkey authentication, setting a positive precedent. Interestingly, users can enable passkeys on Instagram, but only if their account is linked to a Facebook account with passkey support. The inconsistent implementation across Meta's products has raised questions, and the company has yet to provide clarification. As the industry continues to evolve, it's essential for companies to prioritize passkey adoption and provide users with more secure authentication options.
