Oracle's AI Bet Sparks Investor Concerns Amid Steep Stock Decline

Oracle's stock has plummeted 19% in its worst weekly performance since 2001, sparking concerns about the company's debt load and its significant investment in artificial intelligence. The company's market capitalization has lost approximately 55% of its value over the past nine months, despite initial enthusiasm about its AI customer base. To fulfill its AI infrastructure commitments, Oracle is taking on substantial debt, which is creating balance sheet risk and focusing on lower-margin offerings. The company's debt has risen to $130 billion, with capital expenditures increasing 162% to $56 billion in the 2026 fiscal year. Oracle is racing to establish data centers, but unlike its rivals, it cannot offer a full technology stack. The company recorded a negative free cash flow of $24 billion in the latest fiscal year and plans to raise $40 billion through debt and equity financing in fiscal 2027. Despite investor concerns, most analysts remain bullish on Oracle's prospects, with 71% recommending buying the stock. However, the company faces multiple market headwinds, including hefty capital requirements and the potential for AI models to replace some of its products' capabilities. Oracle is pushing forward with its buildout plans, targeting data centers in several states, while focusing on disciplined capital allocation and maintaining a strong balance sheet.
