OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.6 Series with Enhanced Security and Performance

OpenAI has initiated a limited preview of its GPT-5.6 series, comprising three variants - Sol, Terra, and Luna - to a select group of trusted partners. This preview is a precursor to a broader release scheduled for the coming weeks. The Sol variant boasts the strongest performance yet, while Terra offers similar capabilities to its predecessor, GPT-5.5, at nearly half the cost. The Luna variant is positioned as the most affordable option. Notably, OpenAI has implemented a 'max' reasoning effort in GPT-5.6, enabling Sol to delve deeper into complex problems. This enhancement, combined with strengthened protections for high-risk activities and sensitive requests, makes Sol an attractive option for cybersecurity applications. To fortify its models against potential vulnerabilities, OpenAI invested significant resources, including 700,000 GPU hours, to identify and mitigate universal jailbreaks. The company has also established a rapid-response process to address newly discovered jailbreaks. The pricing for GPT-5.6 variants has been set at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output for Sol, $2.50 for input and $15 for output for Terra, and $1 for input and $6 for output for Luna. These developments underscore OpenAI's commitment to balancing model performance with security and affordability, as the company navigates the evolving landscape of AI regulation and cybersecurity.
