OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera company, in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Los Altos, California-based firm was founded in 2019 and had raised roughly $30 million from investors prior to the acquisition.
Glass Imaging was started by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who had led the team behind Apple's Portrait Mode. At their new company, they apply AI to work around the physical size limits of smartphone cameras. Instead of using AI to edit photos after the fact, Glass Imaging trains neural networks on individual camera systems - such as the different cameras across smartphone models - to produce better images the moment a photo is taken.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ChatGPT maker is rumored to be developing its own hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices.
In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Apple designer Jony Ive revealed they had been collaborating on a device startup called io, when OpenAI purchased Ive's company for $6.5 billion.
