OpenAI, Google and Anthropic in talks on joint AI safety effort

OpenAI has confirmed it is in discussions with other artificial intelligence companies, including Anthropic and Google, about cooperating on safety concerns.

A spokesperson said the talks have been underway since July, when Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis published a proposal for a U.S.-led "Standards Body." In an essay on X, Hassabis suggested a public-private partnership or self-regulatory organization with federal oversight, similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

The three firms are strong competitors, but have faced growing pressure over AI safety and security. On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow improvements to their most advanced models. Hassabis praised the essay, writing on X that the direction was right even if details need work. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he agreed on the need to pace the industry's most advanced models, adding that a slowdown has been a "primary topic" at OpenAI in recent weeks.

The Information first reported the discussions. Google and Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this month, OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, wrote in a blog post that the company is pursuing "industry-led standards" with other companies, with or without government support, saying such efforts would complement rather than replace mandatory federal safeguards.
