OpenAI has expanded its Daybreak cyber defense service, adding a new tier structure and a dedicated cyber-focused model. The service, launched earlier this year, bundles models, tools, and workflows for defenders. It now comes in two tiers: Blue and Red, both granting approved customers access to OpenAI's limited-access frontier cyber models.
Blue is positioned as the recommended starting point for most defenders, offering incident response, malware analysis, and patch validation. Red provides a broader toolkit, including purpose-trained cybersecurity models for security testing and vulnerability research. The new GPT-5.6-Cyber model, built on GPT-5.6 Sol, is exclusive to the Red tier and enhances specialized cybersecurity tasks.
GPT-5.6-Cyber is currently available only to trusted customer partners, reportedly including Accenture, IBM, CrowdStrike, and Cloudflare. The expansion follows a rise in AI agents being used for malicious activities, such as compromising platforms or creating fake profiles for social engineering. Critics note that such threats also serve as marketing opportunities for AI labs. OpenAI's blog post warns that threat actors will increasingly use AI for cyberattacks at unprecedented speed and scale, giving defenders a narrowing window to prepare. Enterprises remain interested in buying protection from AI labs that understand these risks first-hand.
