OpenAI Considers Rebranding Data Centers as 'AI Compute Campuses'

OpenAI is reportedly planning a public relations push after the midterm elections, and one idea on the table is giving data centers a new name: "AI compute campuses."

According to Axios, the company's chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, outlined several proposals aimed at shaping the AI debate. Among them: developing AI "speed limits," helping people see AI as empowering in their daily lives, pushing the U.S. to help set global standards, and rebranding data centers.

Lehane told Axios the midterms will be "a bit of a movie trailer for what you're going to see in 2028," when he expects AI to be "the issue" in the presidential election.

He described the ongoing debate around data centers as "good and healthy," saying communities should hold companies accountable so they "really and truly get a transformative benefit from these projects." That debate has pushed Amazon and Microsoft to say they will no longer use NDAs in negotiations with local governments.
