OpenAI Closes Record $120 Billion Round to Scale Compute Infrastructure

OpenAI has secured an additional $10 billion in capital, pushing its record-breaking funding round past the $120 billion mark. CFO Sarah Friar confirmed the update during a Tuesday interview, noting the final sum eclipsed the company's initial $100 billion target. This influx suggests OpenAI is fortifying its balance sheet ahead of an anticipated public offering.

The latest commitment includes participation from Microsoft, Andreessen Horowitz, D.E. Shaw Ventures, and TPG. Friar emphasized the breadth of support, spanning venture capital, private equity, and sovereign entities. Microsoft remains a key strategic ally, with Friar praising CEO Satya Nadella's early backing despite the evolving dynamic between the tech giants.

This tranche follows a massive $110 billion raise announced in February, which valued the company at $730 billion pre-money. That wave brought in $50 billion from Amazon, alongside $30 billion commitments from Nvidia and SoftBank. Beyond capital, the Amazon deal locks in custom model development and expands cloud compute agreements by $100 billion over eight years.

For engineering teams watching the sector, the capital allocation signals aggressive scaling. CEO Sam Altman reiterated that meeting global demand requires immense collective computing power. Since launching ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI has grown to 900 million weekly active users. The startup reported roughly $13.1 billion in revenue for 2025. With private markets nearly saturated, industry observers expect this capital campaign to precede a blockbuster IPO. The focus now shifts to how this funding translates into next-generation model training and infrastructure expansion.
