OpenAI closes gap with Anthropic among US businesses, new spending data shows

Fresh data from corporate card and expense management firm Ramp suggests OpenAI is regaining momentum with US businesses, even though Anthropic still holds a lead in market share. The numbers, drawn from over 70,000 American companies using Ramp's bill pay and corporate card products, show Anthropic at nearly 44% of paying business users as of July, versus OpenAI's nearly 40%. That gap has persisted since May, when Anthropic first overtook OpenAI's early dominance.

However, a closer look at the third quarter to date reveals OpenAI is currently growing faster among this group, according to Ramp economist Ara Kharazian. He attributed the shift to strong reception for OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol model, while noting Anthropic's Fable 5 underperformed in adoption and real-world use, partly due to price and regulatory data retention rules. Anthropic's Fable tier is pricier and aimed at more specialized use cases, but the company drew criticism for requiring 30-day data retention.

Ramp's data only covers its own customer base, which skews toward tech and excludes large enterprises using other spend-management tools, so it's not a full market picture. Still, the volatility suggests enterprise AI spending isn't firmly locked in, as businesses switch allegiances with each new model release. Overall, the share of Ramp customers paying for AI has climbed steadily, topping 50% in March and reaching nearly 56% by July, indicating the market itself is expanding.
