The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has been running a unique summer program that introduces young students to the world of insects. Through its Bug Week celebration and the UF Department of Entomology and Nematology Field Camp, also known as Bug Camp, students get to experience hands-on learning in a immersive setting. This program, run in partnership with 4-H, has not only sparked curiosity in its attendees but has also played a significant role in shaping the academic and career paths of some of its participants. For instance, two UF/IFAS students credit Bug Camp with helping them develop a lifelong friendship and a deeper interest in their field of study. By providing a platform for students to engage with the science of insects in a practical way, Bug Camp demonstrates the value of experiential learning in cultivating the next generation of experts in agricultural and environmental science. The success of this program highlights the importance of investing in initiatives that provide students with real-world experience and mentorship, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of these critical fields.
