Elon Musk has announced that his AI chatbot Grok will produce a full-length, AI-generated adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey before the end of 2026, claiming it will be both historically accurate and true to the original epic. The X owner shared a three-minute AI short created by a follower using Grok Imagine as a preview of what's to come.
The move is the latest salvo in Musk's ongoing criticism of Christopher Nolan's blockbuster adaptation, which he has attacked for its casting choices. Musk has repeatedly accused Hollywood of hypocrisy, echoing far-right commentators who objected to Lupita Nyong'o playing Helen of Troy and trans actor Elliot Page appearing as Sinon. Historians note that Homer's work is fiction, and Nolan has dismissed the backlash as irrelevant, saying such debates always precede a film's release.
Despite Musk's efforts to stir controversy, Nolan's The Odyssey has performed strongly at the box office, earning $124.5 million in its North American opening weekend and $264.1 million globally. It scored an A CinemaScore and ranks as the year's top R-rated launch. Musk's Grok-generated version, which appears to feature an all-white cast, is unlikely to threaten Nolan's achievement, which was shot on Imax film with minimal CGI.
