Motional Returns to Las Vegas Streets, This Time Through Uber

In 2024, Motional appeared finished. The autonomous vehicle venture between Hyundai and Aptiv had cut hundreds of jobs, halted its driverless programs, and entered a period of deep uncertainty. While competitors like Waymo expanded, Motional retreated, its future in serious doubt.

Now, two years later, the company is operating again. Motional's robotaxis are available on the Uber app in Las Vegas, a cautious but tangible return to commercial service. The vehicles, Hyundai Ioniq 5s, currently have safety drivers and operate within a defined area of the Strip. Riders booking through Uber are notified they're getting an autonomous vehicle.

This relaunch follows a brutal period for the wider industry. Cruise suspended operations after a high-profile incident. Argo AI shut down. Motional itself underwent what insiders called a 'major reset,' with Aptiv taking significant financial losses. The company survived by narrowing its technical focus and leaning heavily on its pre-existing partnership with Uber.

The strategy is pragmatic. Instead of building its own ride-hail app, Motional is using Uber's established network of users. This gives the company immediate access to passengers without the massive cost of customer acquisition. For Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, adding Motional supports his vision of the app becoming a platform for various autonomous fleets.

The road ahead remains challenging. Motional must prove it can expand its operational zone, eventually remove the safety driver, and demonstrate it can operate without endless subsidies from its corporate parents. The company's engineers report a more disciplined, less hype-driven culture post-reset. Public acceptance of robotaxis has also grown, shifting the question from 'Is this possible?' to 'Does this work reliably?'

Motional's second chance is notable in a field littered with failed projects. Whether this return leads to a sustainable business or becomes another footnote will be one of the defining stories for autonomous driving this year.
