Mississippi Deploys AI-Powered Traffic Enforcement System

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has introduced a new traffic enforcement system, leveraging AI camera trailers to monitor and detect traffic violations. This system, leased from Acusensus, utilizes trailer-mounted cameras that can capture high-speed images of drivers, even at speeds of up to 186 miles per hour. The cameras can detect a range of infractions, including texting while driving, speeding, and failure to secure child passengers. When a violation is detected, the system alerts an officer in real-time, who can then pull over the vehicle and issue a citation. The system's design ensures that officers, rather than automated systems, remain responsible for issuing citations. This approach has helped alleviate some concerns about privacy and automated enforcement. However, some lawmakers have expressed reservations about the potential implications of relying on AI-powered surveillance. State Representative Dan Eubanks has raised questions about the balance between public safety and individual privacy, highlighting the need for careful consideration of the system's implementation and potential future developments. In contrast, State Senator Joey Fillingane has expressed support for the system, provided that officers retain the authority to issue citations. The three-year, $2.052 million contract, funded through federal grants, aims to reduce crashes and improve road safety in high-risk areas, including construction zones and locations where traditional traffic enforcement is challenging. As the system rolls out, drivers in Mississippi will need to be aware of the increased surveillance and potential consequences of traffic violations.
