Meta Gives $2 Million to Five US Universities for AI Medical Research

Meta is putting $2 million into partnerships with five US universities to back research using its Superintelligence models. The schools are California Institute of Technology, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Louisiana State University, Indiana University, and UTHealth Houston. The money supports work in medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and mathematics.

In healthcare, researchers will use Meta's models, glasses, and mixed reality headsets to close gaps in care. At Louisiana State University, Dr. Michael Dunham leads the Eyes-On project, which is building a computer vision system to detect dislodged tracheostomy tubes and signs of distress in infants who cannot cry for help. The system explores Meta's open weight SAM models for tracking and is designed for bedside cameras and edge computing. A proof-of-concept has been published.

At Indiana University, Dr. David Crandall is developing multimodal AI methods to analyze conversations involving older adults with dementia, aiming to help conversational agents and social robots adapt to individual users. At The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Yuan Xue leads a project with cardiologist Dr. Yuchi Han and Dr. Xia Ning to test whether Meta's open-weight models can predict future heart failure with preserved ejection fraction risk from routine abdominal CT scans, longitudinal medical records, and ECG data when available. The model is being designed to handle missing data, since clinical practice rarely provides a complete set of inputs.
