Lombard is joining forces with Bitwise Asset Management to let institutions earn yield on Bitcoin without moving coins out of cold storage. Announced Tuesday at the Digital Asset Summit in New York, the partnership targets the estimated $500 billion in BTC sitting idle in institutional custody.
The technical backbone relies on "Bitcoin Smart Accounts." Jacob Phillips, Lombard's CEO, explained that this architecture connects institutional custody directly with onchain finance. Instead of using bridges or wrapped tokens, the system utilizes partially signed Bitcoin transactions and timelocks to verify collateral. This means positions appear onchain while the underlying assets stay put, removing custody, bridge, and counterparty risks simultaneously. For engineering teams, this eliminates the need for complex bridge monitoring while maintaining cryptographic proof of reserves.
Bitwise will handle yield strategies combining DeFi lending with tokenized real-world assets, while Morpho provides the decentralized lending infrastructure. The solution targets asset managers and corporate treasuries looking to make long-held positions productive without triggering taxable events or changing custodians.
Rollout is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. Lombard plans to onboard additional custodians and protocols to widen access. Phillips notes this shifts Bitcoin from a passive store of value to productive institutional capital.
Bitcoin DeFi is gaining momentum. DefiLlama data places total value locked near $2.93 billion, a fraction of the $1.4 trillion market cap. Babylon Protocol currently leads with $2.8 billion locked, followed by Lombard at $744 million. Recent integrations, like Babylon with Ledger and Telegram's yield vaults, signal growing demand for non-custodial yield tools. This partnership could finally unlock the liquidity trapped in traditional custody silos, offering a blueprint for secure, programmatic capital efficiency.
