Lawyer Says AI Leaders' Safety Talk Can't Be Trusted

Attorney Jay Edelson, who is leading lawsuits against OpenAI, Anthropic and other major technology companies, said Tuesday that the words of the industry's top executives cannot be believed.

Appearing on News Nation with Leland Vittert, Edelson was asked whether he had ever seen industry leaders give up responsibility for making their products safer while also arguing those products are extremely dangerous. He said he would not lump everyone together, but agreed with the premise, stating, "You can't trust anything that comes out of Dario's mouth or Sam Altman's mouth," referring to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Edelson pointed to xAI CEO Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman, which sought to force the company back into a nonprofit and to put safety first. He argued the companies' motivation is money, saying they believe they can profit more in the long run.

His comments followed warnings from several current and former Anthropic and OpenAI researchers, who accused the firms of acting irresponsibly in the race toward superintelligence and of "gambling with our lives." Former researcher Jacob Coxon wrote on X that the people building AI sincerely believe it could kill everyone by the end of the decade, and Anthropic's head of alignment science, Evan Hubinger, affirmed the warning.

Edelson compared the situation to a six-sided die with one side causing mass extinction. He said Altman does not care and is willing to roll it, while most ordinary people who believed their product could cause an extinction-level event would pull it from the market. After the researchers' warnings, Amodei, Altman and Musk each made similar calls to slow down AI capability development.
