Kleiner Perkins Unlocks $3.5B to Fuel Next Wave of AI Scaling

Kleiner Perkins is doubling down on artificial intelligence with a massive $3.5 billion capital raise. The Silicon Valley veteran secured $1 billion for its 22nd early-stage fund and allocated $2.5 billion specifically for late-stage growth, marking a sharp increase from its $2 billion raise in 2024.

For machine learning engineers and founders, the signal is clear: capital is flowing heavily into AI infrastructure and application layers. For engineering teams, this influx suggests sustained funding for compute-heavy workloads and specialized model training. Kleiner Perkins already holds positions in high-profile projects like Together AI, Harvey, and OpenEvidence. They also backed Anthropic and SpaceX, both poised for public listings in 2026. These potential exits could unlock significant liquidity for the broader tech sector, especially after a dry spell in IPOs.

The firm's strategy recently paid off with Figma's public debut last year, following their 2018 Series B lead. Additionally, the Google acqui-hire of portfolio company Windsurf in 2025 delivered solid returns. Despite this firepower, Kleiner Perkins operates with a lean structure of just five partners. Recent shifts include Ev Randle moving to Benchmark and Annie Case transitioning to an advisory position.

This move mirrors a broader trend of mega-funds. Thrive Capital recently closed $10 billion, General Catalyst is chasing similar numbers, and Founders Fund locked in $6 billion for growth investments. With dry powder accumulating at this scale, competition for top-tier AI talent and novel architectures will likely intensify throughout the year.
