Instagram's TV Gambit: A Technical Bet on Longform Content

Instagram has launched a series of new features for its smart TV app, aiming to capture users' attention on the biggest screens in their homes. The app now supports vertical Reels, disappearing Stories, and horizontal videos with aspect ratios similar to YouTube. However, the success of this pivot hinges on the company's ability to convince creators to produce longform, episodic content tailored for TV viewing. Technically, this requires a significant shift in content strategy, as Instagram's phone-native format has traditionally focused on short, easily consumable clips. The TV app's new features, such as dedicated channels and casting capabilities, are designed to facilitate a more stationary, shared viewing experience. Yet, the inherent differences between phone and TV viewing habits pose a challenge. Instagram's VP of product, Tessa Lyons, acknowledges that shortform content can serve as a stepping stone for creators to produce longer, more episodic stories. To succeed, Instagram must incentivize creators to produce high-quality, TV-specific content, rather than simply repurposing phone-native videos. The company's plan to develop longform content and episodic series with creators is a step in the right direction, but the TV app's ability to compete with YouTube and other established platforms remains uncertain. Ultimately, the success of Instagram's TV pivot depends on its capacity to adapt to the unique demands of TV viewing, including sustained user attention and a broader content library.
