How to spot and stop unauthorized access to your AI accounts

Hackers can target AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity just as they do any other online service. If you suspect a breach, here’s how to check and secure your accounts, based on a practical guide from TechCrunch.

The standard advice applies: use unique passwords stored in a password manager and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) where possible. ChatGPT and Perplexity support MFA; Claude does not, instead relying on email login links rather than passwords.

For ChatGPT, open the site in a browser, click your username at the bottom left, go to Settings, then Security and Login, and select Active Sessions. You’ll see all logged-in devices. If any look unfamiliar, you can log out that single device or choose “Log out all.” To change your password, you must first log out, then use the “Forgot password” link on the login page. Enter your email, receive a six-digit code, enter it, and create a new password.

For Claude, click your username at the bottom left, go to Settings, then Account, and view Active sessions. Hover over any suspicious session, click the three vertical dots, and choose “Log out” or “Terminate.” You can also log out of all devices. Since Claude doesn’t use passwords, you’ll just log back in via an email link.

Perplexity doesn’t show active sessions. If you’re worried, click your username at the bottom left, go to All settings, then “Sign out of all sessions,” and confirm. Log back in with your email, and you’ll receive a unique six-digit code to enter on the site, or you can click the sign-in button in the email directly.

These steps help you regain control quickly, but prevention—strong passwords and MFA—remains your best defense.
