Hibernation Mode in Windows 11 May Prematurely Wear Out Your SSD

A recent report by XDA highlights a potential issue with Windows 11's hibernation mode, which can gradually degrade the components of your computer. When in hibernation mode, the contents of the RAM are saved to the hard disk or solid-state drive (SSD), unlike the standard sleep mode where data is loaded into RAM. This repeated saving and loading of data can cause wear and tear on the SSD, as each cell has a limited number of write and erase cycles. In contrast, traditional hard disks have a much higher tolerance for data writing and deletion. According to XDA specialist Chandravir Matur, if a computer is put into hibernation mode twice a day, Windows 11 can write and delete around 23.36 terabytes of data per year, which can significantly reduce the lifespan of an SSD with a 600-terabyte endurance rating. Additionally, the hibernation mode also overloads the SLC cache, causing the SSD controller to overheat. This finding reinforces the recommendation to store large amounts of data on traditional hard disks rather than SSDs, which are better suited for running operating systems, programs, and games.
