Ground Robots Take on Thousands of Missions Each Month in Ukraine Conflict

The New York Times reports that ground robots are quietly transforming the battlefield in Ukraine, handling thousands of missions monthly. These unmanned vehicles now deliver supplies, evacuate wounded soldiers, transport ammunition, lay mines, and even hold defensive positions. While drone warfare has already reshaped combat tactics, these ground-based systems represent what the newspaper calls a "more subtle" revolution.

Russian defense officials regularly announce the destruction of Ukrainian ground robotic systems. On July 14, the ministry stated that drone operators from the "Southern" group of forces eliminated several Ukrainian ground robotic complexes near Kramatorsk. Those particular units were being used to ferry ammunition and supplies to Ukrainian fighters in the area.

The shift toward ground robotics marks a significant operational change. Unlike aerial drones that have dominated headlines, these land-based machines operate closer to the front lines, handling dangerous logistics and support roles that previously required human soldiers. As both sides continue to adapt, the use of ground robots is expected to expand further, making the battlefield increasingly automated.
