Three months after Elon Musk said Grok would release a full-length, "historically accurate" movie version of "The Odyssey," the company has published just seven minutes - now billed as "Episode 1 of our Odyssey series." The clip was made with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker.
Musk had criticized Christopher Nolan's take on "The Odyssey" over its casting of nonwhite and transgender actors. Nolan has called himself "a techno-skeptic" and said that before AI, he had never seen a technology "so completely rejected by the public." His film, shot across six countries with a cast and crew of thousands, became a box office success after its July release, selling out Imax screenings for months.
TechCrunch's reviewer found the Grok footage better than expected in places - some shots could pass for real actors on a real sea - but said it lacks artistry, inspiration or human interest, with an endless voiceover and stilted dialogue. The reviewer struggled to stay engaged even halfway through the seven minutes.
