Google's Gemini Now Offers a Seamless Switch from Rival Chatbots

Google announced a pair of new features for its Gemini AI on Thursday, directly addressing a major friction point for users considering a change: the hassle of starting over. The tools, "Import Memory" and "Import Chat History," are designed to let people bring their existing AI's knowledge and conversations with them in just a few steps.

The process is straightforward. For "Import Memory," a user copies a provided prompt from Gemini into their current chatbot. They then take that AI's personalized response and paste it back into Gemini, effectively giving it a snapshot of their preferences. To transfer entire conversations, "Import Chat History" allows users to upload an exported file (typically a .zip) from their previous service, letting them resume old chats within Gemini.

This move aligns with a broader industry shift toward making AI services more interchangeable. Earlier this month, Anthropic refined a similar data-porting tool for its Claude assistant. Google's rollout coincides with broader access to its Search Live feature and a new voice model, Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, which promises more fluid conversational responses.

The features are available now for free and paid consumer accounts, though availability may vary by platform. They are not currently offered for business, enterprise, or accounts held by users under 18. In a related terminology update, Google has also renamed "past chats" within Gemini to "memory," framing these interactions as a continuous, portable record.
