Google’s Full-Stack Agent Platform: Silicon to Agents, With a Side of Openness

Google Cloud Next 2026 made a clear architectural bet: own the hardware, the model, the data platform, and the agent orchestration layer. The centerpiece is the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, a reworked Vertex AI that now handles the full lifecycle—build, scale, govern, and optimize—for autonomous agents. Developers get Agent Studio for low-code workflows and a graph-based kit for complex orchestration. But the real engineering story is integration depth.

Andi Gutmans, head of Google Cloud’s data operations, framed the competitive advantage in a recent interview: no other cloud provider owns the AI infrastructure, the model, and the data platform. AWS and Azure lack proprietary models. Data vendors miss the hardware and AI layers. Model makers focus narrowly. Google ties them together. This matters as agentic systems scale to thousands of workers, where tight coordination controls cost.

Gemini 2.5’s reasoning leap forced a full rebuild of every agent—from conversation analytics to data engineering—over the past 18 months. The Knowledge Catalog now unlocks 90% of enterprise data, including unstructured files that previously required heavy ETL. No more six-month ontology builds with teams of 20. Agents reason over raw data directly.

Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, now at version 1.2, runs in production at 150 organizations under the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation. Microsoft, AWS, Salesforce, SAP, and ServiceNow all use it. Signed agent cards verify domains cryptographically. Google also rolled out managed Model Context Protocol servers via Apigee, bridging APIs to agents.

Hardware underpins the stack: eighth-gen TPUs for training and inference, paired with Nvidia chips. A $750 million partner fund accelerates builds. Partnerships with Accenture and Oracle deliver industry-specific accelerators and plain-language database queries via Gemini.

Google hosts over 200 models, including Anthropic’s Claude, Llama, and DeepSeek. Databricks, Snowflake, and Informatica integrate data tools. A cross-cloud lakehouse queries AWS or Azure data with low latency. Gutmans described it as differentiated yet open: “We want to build the best platform.”

Real-world adoption: GE Appliances runs 800+ agents in manufacturing. KPMG hit 90% Gemini Enterprise adoption in a month. Comcast, PayPal, and healthcare providers use agents in production. Agent governance controls mitigate prompt injection; an AI control center monitors access. Google processes 16 billion tokens per minute internally; 75% of new code comes from AI, reviewed by engineers.

Critics point to lagging raw model power behind OpenAI or Anthropic. But enterprise demands governance, interoperability, and production readiness. A2A at 150 firms. Pre-built Task Forces for defense and data clouds. Project Mariner for web browsing. Workspace Studio for no-code agents.

The bet: own from chip to inbox. Rivals hand pieces. Google builds the platform. Nearly 80 data announcements, rebuilt agents, unstructured data activated, cross-cloud queries. Pilots end. Production scales.
