Google Staff Resign Over Military AI Contracts

Google is facing internal backlash as tech workers leave its AI division, Google DeepMind, over the company's military contracts, the BBC reports.

London-based research engineer Sofia Liguori resigned this week, saying she felt "ashamed to work at Google" as the company pushes further into military AI. AI researcher Andreas Kirsch also resigned this month, arguing Google's oversight is not sufficient to deploy AI safely in classified military settings.

Google says it follows a consistent review process for such contracts, including compliance with its AI principles, and has channels for employees to raise concerns without retaliation.

Google signed a Pentagon contract this year allowing its AI models for "any lawful government purpose," alongside deals by OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft and others. Critics question whether AI is reliable enough for warfare without stronger testing and human oversight.
