Gemini 4 agents complete Minecraft autonomously in 27-hour run

A team of four Google Gemini 4 agents has beaten Minecraft's Ender Dragon with no human intervention, according to a new paper from Google researchers. The agents were placed in a randomized survival world with no assigned roles, strategies or game-specific tools, each controlling a player through the open-source Mineflayer library and coordinating via in-game chat and shared memory.

The agents split tasks on their own, warned each other about threats, shared tips and coordinates, and recovered items from dead teammates. They settled into roles: one made tools, one gathered food and supplies, one lit a key portal, and one built Enderman shelters and landed the final blow.

The run took 27.23 hours, most of it spent on the dragon. The agents wrote and ran 2,783 programs, exchanged 229 messages and died 605 times. A fifth agent, the Observer, monitored the session as an independent witness, checking for cheating and publishing live and summary reports. The run used 1.35 billion input tokens, costing $810 at Gemini's list price or $1,620 at the standard price.

The team says this is the first end-to-end autonomous completion of Minecraft by AI agents using only the standard Mineflayer library, without pre-scouted seeds or human-written game-specific tools. Winning, they note, required a coherent plan across thousands of dependent steps for more than a day.
