Federal Agency Mandates Data Center Energy Reporting

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) will soon compel data centers to report detailed energy consumption metrics. This decision, confirmed to Wired, follows a formal request from Senators Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren, who urged the agency to address the sector's expanding electricity demands.

The forthcoming nationwide survey will be obligatory for operators. While an implementation date is pending, the EIA is currently running two pilot surveys. The first, launched in March, targets 196 companies across Texas, Washington state, and the Northern Virginia data hub. A second pilot in three additional states began in April. EIA head Tristan Abbey anticipates these pilots will conclude by September, providing the data needed to finalize the mandatory national questionnaire.

For engineering teams, this signals a new operational variable. System design decisions—from hardware selection to workload placement—will increasingly factor into public regulatory filings. The mandate will likely push energy efficiency from a cost optimization concern to a compliance and reporting priority, influencing architectural trade-offs around compute, cooling, and power infrastructure.
