Engineering Jobs Defy Automation Trends, Hiring Data Reveals

Despite widespread concerns that AI would displace engineering jobs, recent hiring data suggests the opposite. According to a report by SignalFire, engineering roles have proven to be the most resilient in the face of automation. The firm's analysis of millions of employee careers across over 80 million companies found that engineering was the most resilient job function in 2025, with a decline in hiring of just 11% compared to 2019 levels. In contrast, total hiring across large tech companies dropped 25% during the same period. Engineers now comprise 55% of all new hires at top tech companies, up from 46% in 2019. This trend is even more pronounced at early-stage startups, which have increased their engineering headcount by 7% since 2019. The continued demand for engineers can be attributed to the fact that AI is augmenting their work, rather than replacing it. As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted, the use of agentic AI has made software engineers more productive, generating new ideas and expanding their workload. This phenomenon is an example of the Jevons paradox, where increased efficiency leads to greater demand for a resource. SignalFire's head of research, Asher Bantock, observed that engineers are now more productive than ever, with endless work to do. The data suggests that AI is not substituting for engineering talent, but rather enhancing their capabilities and creating new opportunities.
