Eight US states have filed lawsuits against OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, accusing the company of harming children, misleading parents and violating users' rights, according to court documents.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced the action, joined by Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana. The states are seeking to hold OpenAI accountable under local consumer protection laws.
The filings claim ChatGPT can push users toward suicide or illegal acts, give dangerous medical advice, and fuel paranoid and delusional thinking. They also allege it can undermine critical thinking and encourage unhealthy relationship patterns. "ChatGPT has proven it can be dangerous to vulnerable users, such as children," the Iowa filing states.
OpenAI has faced previous lawsuits over suicides. In August it released a teen version of the chatbot, promising safeguards and parental controls. Two months later, the nonprofit Common Sense Media said testing showed ChatGPT for Teens carried an "unacceptable risk" for minors.
