Building a Robust Home Network with Top-Notch NAS Devices

As a data engineer, designing a reliable home network requires careful consideration of storage solutions. Network-attached storage (NAS) devices offer a versatile way to boost home networks, enabling seamless file sharing, backups, and media streaming. After extensive testing, I recommend the Synology two-bay NAS for its exceptional speed, reaching 300 MB/s read and 250 MB/s write, and its user-friendly software. The device's compact design, generous ports, and upgradable RAM make it an ideal choice for average home users. However, its relatively high cost and brief lockdown of third-party drives are notable drawbacks. Alternatively, the Ugreen NASync DH4300 Plus offers an affordable four-bay solution with decent performance, although its average file transfer speeds and limited app selection are concerns. Asustor's NAS devices, such as the six-bay model, excel in speed and silence, making them suitable for TV connectivity and surveillance stations. When selecting a NAS device, consider factors like bays and slots, software and app support, speed, ports, and noise levels. By choosing the right NAS device, users can create a robust home network, streamline file sharing, and reduce reliance on cloud storage subscriptions.
