BRK Capital Secures $14.5M to Back Black-Led Tech Ventures

Toronto's BRK Capital is advancing its second fund, securing $20 million CAD ($14.5 million USD) in initial commitments. Managing Partner Lise Birikundavyi confirmed the milestone Monday, noting the firm is halfway to its $50 million CAD target.

While some U.S. investors have pulled back on diversity-focused messaging amid shifting political tides, Birikundavyi argues the Canadian market views inclusive capital differently. She frames the strategy not as charity, but as arbitrage. "Expanding access to overlooked founders continues to surface high-quality deals," she said. The firm targets high-growth tech startups building infrastructure for work, living, and connectivity.

The thesis leans heavily on demographics. With nearly 70% of Canada's Black population being first or second-generation immigrants, founders often possess built-in networks for international expansion. This global-first approach offers a structural edge in scaling data-intensive products across borders. For data teams, this means backing companies designed to handle cross-region complexity from day one.

BRK plans to write checks between $250,000 and $1.5 million. The firm's track record supports the pitch: Fund I, launched in 2021, raised $22 million and currently outperforms 75% of vintage peers. Birikundavyi expects to close Fund II by December 2026, aiming to back 25 companies. For engineering leaders watching where venture money flows, this signals continued appetite for diverse founding teams building scalable tech solutions. The focus remains on performance metrics and market reach rather than ideological checkboxes.
