Arc Raiders Studio Swaps AI Voices for Human Actors After Player Feedback

In a notable shift for a live-service game, Embark Studios has replaced a portion of the AI-generated voice lines in its hit title Arc Raiders with performances by professional actors. The move comes months after the game's successful October launch, which saw nearly half a million concurrent players on Steam.

CEO Patrick Söderlund confirmed the re-recording in a recent interview, acknowledging a clear gap in quality. "A real professional actor is better than AI; that's just how it is," Söderlund stated. The studio had initially used licensed voice actor samples for text-to-speech systems, restricting the AI to less critical dialogue. This approach, however, drew consistent criticism from players who found the synthetic voices disrupted their immersion.

The studio's response signals a partial retreat from its initial strategy. Embark is now bringing voice actors back into the recording booth, paying them for new sessions, and plans to continue working with them on future updates. Söderlund emphasized the studio's commitment to these collaborations but clarified that only "some" AI lines have been replaced. This suggests a hybrid model will persist for the foreseeable future, leaving the door open for selective AI use in non-essential roles. The episode highlights the ongoing tension between efficiency and quality in game development, with player sentiment still holding considerable sway.
