Apple Tests Standalone Siri App Ahead of WWDC 2026 Reveal

Apple is preparing to redefine its Apple Intelligence strategy this June. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the tech giant plans to unveil a significantly rebuilt Siri at WWDC 2026 on June 8. This update arrives alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27, marking a shift from simple voice commands to a systemwide AI agent.

Engineering teams should note the architectural changes. The new Siri accesses personal data across emails, messages, and notes to execute complex tasks within third-party applications. It also pulls web-sourced responses with summaries and images, positioning itself against competitors like Google Gemini and Perplexity. This requires robust retrieval-augmented generation pipelines to handle sensitive user data securely.

Perhaps most interesting for interface designers is the testing of a dedicated Siri application. This standalone client offers a chat-based layout resembling Apple Messages, allowing users to review conversation history, toggle between voice and text, and upload documents for analysis. While voice activation via the power button remains, the app provides a persistent hub for interaction.

UI experiments include placing Siri within the Dynamic Island with a "Search or Ask" prompt, expanding into a translucent panel for extended dialogue. Apple also intends to merge Spotlight search functionality directly into Siri, granting the assistant broader data access. Internal menus in built-in apps may soon feature an "Ask Siri" toggle, enabling context-aware queries on highlighted text or related emails.

This overhaul represents Apple's renewed commitment to competitive AI infrastructure. By moving beyond simple command recognition to deep system integration, Apple aims to close the gap with rival generative models. The move signals a broader industry trend toward agent-based workflows rather than passive search. Expect full technical documentation during the keynote next week.
