Anthropic has made Claude Fable 5 generally available on Amazon Bedrock and the Claude Platform on AWS. The model delivers what the company calls 'Mythos-class' capabilities—state-of-the-art performance on software engineering, knowledge work, and vision tasks—but with a critical architectural twist: a safety gating layer that routes high-risk prompts to a weaker model.
For data and ML engineers, the key technical details start with the execution model. Fable 5 supports long-running, asynchronous inference. That means you can kick off a complex code refactor or document analysis job and poll for results later, without keeping a connection open. The model also includes self-verification: it can generate its own test harnesses and evaluate its outputs against stated goals, which reduces the need for manual validation loops.
On the vision side, Fable 5 parses diagrams, charts, and tables embedded in PDFs and files. This is relevant for pipelines processing financial reports, legal documents, or architectural drawings—essentially any workflow where structured information lives inside unstructured containers.
Now the safety architecture. Anthropic has built a classifier that sits in front of the model. If a prompt touches cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, or health, it gets redirected to Opus 4.8 instead of Fable 5. The same model without these guardrails is called Claude Mythos 5, available only to vetted customers. This means you need to design your application with the understanding that certain inputs will silently fall back to a different model. Pricing reflects this: if a harmful prompt is rerouted, you pay Opus rates for that request.
Accessing the model requires opting into data sharing via the Data Retention API. Anthropic mandates 30-day retention of inputs and outputs, plus human review for abuse detection. You must set `provider_data_sharing` before invoking the model. There is no console UI at launch—only the API.
Programmatic access is via the Anthropic Messages API on the `bedrock-mantle` endpoint, or the Converse/Invoke APIs on `bedrock-runtime`. The model ID for Fable 5 is `anthropic.claude-fable-5`. Console support is coming, but for now, everything is code-first.
Fable 5 is available in US East (N. Virginia) and Europe (Stockholm), with more regions coming. If you're building on Bedrock, this is the first model in the Mythos tier with built-in safety routing. Plan your error handling and fallback logic accordingly.
