Anthropic's Claude Code Now Executes Saved Workflows, Shifting AI from Tool to Process Participant

Anthropic has moved its Claude Code agent beyond conversational prompts. A new feature, Routines, allows engineers to define multi-step workflows in markdown files. These files, stored within a project's version control, turn natural language instructions into repeatable, adaptable procedures.

The technical design is notable. Instead of creating a new domain-specific language, Anthropic uses simple markdown with natural language steps. This lowers the adoption barrier but introduces a core engineering trade-off: the system sacrifices deterministic execution for contextual flexibility. A routine instructing Claude to 'fix type errors' will be interpreted dynamically each run, based on the current code state. This blends the repeatability of a shell script with the judgment of an AI, a deliberate attempt to bridge two distinct automation paradigms.

For system design, the choice to colocate routines with project code is significant. It makes workflows portable, shareable, and auditable. Routines are composable, enabling complex processes by chaining simpler ones. Anthropic included mandatory checkpoints for risky operations, a safeguard ensuring human oversight remains part of the loop.

This positions Claude Code less as a code generator and more as an orchestrator within broader engineering systems. The architecture—plain text files, composable steps, explicit control points—suggests a foundation for future integrations with ticketing, messaging, and deployment platforms. The immediate utility is encoding team-specific processes like deployment checklists or bug triage into executable, AI-augmented workflows. Success hinges not on token efficiency, but on whether engineers trust the agent to execute these routines reliably within their established systems.
