Anthropic has updated Claude so the chatbot will no longer help users recreate their favorite video games. An X user spotted new instructions in the model telling it to build original games, games within a genre, and games from a user's own designs and assets - but not to recreate a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or labeled original.
Addy Osmani, a member of Anthropic's technical staff, confirmed the change on X, saying the company wants to steer Claude away from recreating someone else's specific game because using it to infringe intellectual property violates usage policy. Original games, genre games, and projects built from a user's own designs and assets should be unaffected, he said, adding that Anthropic will keep iterating to strike the right balance.
The update lands amid a wave of AAA titles being decompiled with AI help and made playable in browsers, including fan projects based on Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto V.
Anthropic has faced IP disputes before. Last year it agreed to a record $1.5 billion settlement in a class action brought by 500,000 authors who accused it of using copyrighted material to train its models. More recently, the estate of Elvis Presley, who died in 1977, filed a similar suit against the company.
