Anthropic has updated its voice mode for Claude, letting users pick between three different models: Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. The move comes weeks after OpenAI refreshed its own voice features, but Anthropic is leaning into flexibility rather than just conversational polish. The voice mode now automatically selects the last model you used in text chat and runs its fastest version by default.
Previously, Claude’s voice mode was locked to the Haiku model—quick but not built for heavy lifting. Now, it can handle longer conversations and more complex tasks. Users can ask for feedback on their communication style, rehearse a client pitch, or brainstorm product market research out loud. The update also lets Claude tap into external apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. You can ask it to reschedule a meeting, draft an email, or create a document without switching screens. That’s a clear edge over OpenAI’s voice mode, which still can’t call on outside tools to get work done.
Multilingual support, introduced in beta earlier this year, is still available. Users can speak in English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish (Latin America/Spain), though they must manually set the language. The updated voice mode is rolling out in beta across all platforms. Free users are limited to the Haiku model and can connect only one app. Notably, Anthropic didn’t tweak the underlying voice model itself, so there are no improvements to interruption handling or conversational flow like OpenAI’s latest release.
