Anthropic Gets Green Light to Restrict Global Access to Top AI Models

The US government has reversed course on export controls that blocked foreign access to Anthropic’s most advanced AI systems, the company confirmed Tuesday. Starting tomorrow, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 will be available again to international users after the Department of Commerce removed the restrictions.

The move follows weeks of confusion after the Trump administration abruptly ordered Anthropic last month to cut off all foreign nationals—including its own employees—from using the models, citing unspecified national security risks. The company later revealed it believed officials were particularly concerned about vulnerabilities in Fable 5. In a letter to Anthropic, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the export license was no longer needed because the company agreed to proactively identify and address security threats, collaborate on future model standards, and report any malicious activity to the government.

Anthropic expressed gratitude to users for their patience and to those who helped redeploy the models. On Friday, the San Francisco-based firm said it had already received approval to supply the models to US organizations that operate critical infrastructure, and it is now working with officials to restore general public access. The restrictions were lifted without a formal explanation for the original order, but the company signaled it accepted the new compliance terms to move forward. More details are expected in the coming days.
