AMD Pours $5 Billion into Anthropic in Major AI Compute Deal

AMD has committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup behind the Claude chatbot, in a deal that promises to significantly expand the company's computing capacity. The announcement, made Wednesday, details a partnership where Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI accelerators, using the chipmaker's new Helios rack-scale system. This marks one of the largest infrastructure investments between a chip vendor and an AI firm, signaling AMD's push to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI hardware market.

The first gigawatt of computing power is slated to come online in the first half of 2027, building on a series of data center deals Anthropic has already struck with SpaceX, TeraWulf, Google, Broadcom, and Amazon. Industry chatter also suggests Anthropic may be in talks with Meta for additional infrastructure support. The scale of these investments underscores the insatiable demand for specialized chips and energy to train and run large language models.

Beyond hardware, the two companies are launching a multi-year engineering collaboration. AMD will integrate Anthropic's Claude AI across its own software development, engineering, and product teams. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” said Tom Brown, Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer, in a statement. The deal is a strategic win for AMD, which has been working to build a credible alternative to Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem and secure long-term commitments from major AI players.
