Alibaba launched a new AI model on Monday designed to run on consumer hardware like laptops, directly responding to Meta's recent push into open-source AI. The Chinese tech giant also released the weights of its most powerful model, Qwen3.8 Max, allowing free downloads and use, though training data and methods may stay private.
The new model, Qwen3.8-27B, is said to handle coding, professional work, research, and long-horizon agentic tasks with "excellent capabilities," and Alibaba claims it matches the performance of a model ten times its size. This move follows Meta's announcement last week to open-source its strongest model and launch new ones aimed at laptops, positioning itself as the U.S. alternative to China's open-weight leadership.
Alibaba has become the leader in open-weight AI, with rivals like DeepSeek and Moonshot also active. Meta's earlier Llama models were outpaced by Chinese players. Industry analysts note that Meta's re-embrace of open weights was a response to Chinese labs taking a large share of that market. Hugging Face reported that Qwen-based models now account for 151,448 derivatives, 2.6 times Meta's footprint.
The launch signals Alibaba's expectation that advanced models will run on edge devices rather than only in data centers, offering faster and more secure on-device AI. Counterpoint Research's Neil Shah called this the "next battleground," while Futurum Group's Nick Patience said Alibaba has made Qwen the most credible non-US model family for hardware partnerships globally.
