AI Doom Warnings Dominate Headlines as Critics Ask Who Benefits from Regulation Push

Fears of an AI apocalypse are flooding global news coverage. But with so much focus on a future catastrophe, critics are asking whether the media is overlooking the harm AI is already causing.

The question extends to the industry's own leaders. As AI CEOs band together to call for regulation, observers are questioning whether their motive is public safety or locking in their grip on the technology's future.

The discussion featured Leo Schwartz of The Information, Sarah Myers West of AI Now, Aaron Mak of Politico, and Cori Crider of the Future of Tech Institute.

Also on the program: a documentary called NAZA, which examines what it describes as Israel's calculated killing of Palestinians, has drawn outrage in Israel and accusations of treason against its Israeli filmmakers, who have faced threats from senior government and military officials as well as journalists and online activists. Elettra Scrivo reported.

And a segment on who gets to publish Africa examined how Cassava Republic Press, founded two decades ago, sought to build a publishing house rooted in Africa rather than outside the continent. Tariq Nafi looked at whether control over African stories has truly come home. Guests included publisher Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, author and professor Chika Unigwe, and Harvard assistant professor Tinashe Mushakavanhu.
