AI Coding Startup Emergent Hits Unicorn Status After $130M Raise

Emergent, an Indian startup building AI tools for software development, has secured $130 million in Series C funding at a $1.5 billion valuation — a fivefold leap from its $300 million valuation just six months ago. The round was led by private equity firm Creaegis, with participation from MNI Ventures-Claypond, Sentinel Global, and existing backers including Khosla Ventures, SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2, Lightspeed, and Y Combinator. Total funding now stands at $230 million.

The company is chasing a crowded market where rivals like Replit, Cursor, and Lovable have also raised billions, and AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic are pushing deeper into coding tools. But Emergent is taking a different angle: targeting small and medium businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs who have long relied on spreadsheets and email to run operations. “Our thesis has always been to build a production-grade application for serious builders,” said co-founder and CEO Mukund Jha. “You’re basically getting an engineering team in a box.” The startup claims $120 million in annualized revenue, up 70% in the last four months, and over 200,000 paying customers.

Jha, who founded Emergent with his brother Madhav Jha in June 2023, says customers range from trucking firms building shipment trackers to construction companies creating ERP systems. North America accounts for about a third of revenue, Europe another third, and India roughly 9%. The company plans to use the fresh capital to improve its AI agent workflows and app success rates, and is considering opening a European office. Emergent currently has around 200 employees, mostly in Bengaluru, and aims to grow its San Francisco team by 30 to 40 people by year’s end.
