Accel and Prosus Wager on Hard Science with Six New Indian Startups

Accel and Prosus are adjusting strategy. Instead of chasing quick SaaS wins, the venture giants just backed six Indian startups tackling problems where markets barely exist yet. From 2,000 applications, they picked teams working on science-heavy challenges with long R&D cycles, signaling a pivot toward hard technology this year.

The cohort resembles a deep tech wishlist. QOSMIC is building optical satellite communication to slash latency, while EtherealX develops reusable launch vehicles. In the data sector, Dognosis combines robotics and machine learning with canine olfaction to detect cancer markers from breath samples. A stealth participant is building brain-computer interfaces, and Praan is automating indoor air quality through advanced sensing networks. Ferra rounds out the group with adaptive resistance training hardware.

Why does this matter for engineers? The funding model acknowledges that breakthrough tech doesn't fit standard growth curves. Accel and Prosus are co-investing $500,000 to $2 million per company, matching each other's checks. More importantly, they deferred part of the equity conversion to protect founders from early dilution during long development phases. This structure recognizes that training complex models or manufacturing orbital hardware takes longer than shipping web apps.

Pratik Agarwal at Accel noted these ventures need time more than just cash. Ashutosh Sharma of Prosus added that progress here is non-linear, relying on technical milestones rather than monthly recurring revenue. In an era where AI infrastructure often dominates headlines, this bet suggests top-tier capital is ready to wait for hardware and biological innovations to mature. It is a reminder that significant engineering challenges still require patient money.
